Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan plaster technique that has been used for centuries to create waterproof surfaces. This unique method involves the application of a lime-based plaster, which is then polished and treated with a soap solution to make it waterproof and durable. Tadelakt finishes are often used in bathrooms due to their seamless, elegant appearance and resistance to moisture, however, more and more people are using Tadelakt on other surfaces like sinks, fireplaces, backsplashes, and accent walls.

Tadelakt is not only aesthetically pleasing with its smooth, lustrous finish but also highly functional for bathroom environments. Its natural waterproof properties make it an excellent choice for areas exposed to water, such as showers and sinks. Additionally, Tadelakt is mold and mildew resistant, which contributes to a healthier bathroom environment.

Installing a Tadelakt bathroom typically involves preparing the underlying surface or substrate in a similar fashion as you would prepare for tile. Then we apply several layers of the Tadelakt plaster, and finish it with the traditional polishing method and soap treatment to achieve its characteristic waterproof and shiny surface. After the surface has cured for about a week, we return to apply a wax coating. The process requires skilled craftsmanship to ensure the plaster adheres well and achieves the desired aesthetic and functional qualities.

The duration of a Tadelakt installation can vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. Each step of the process usually needs to dry or cure overnight so most projects will take no less than 4/5 days. For the average tub surround/standing shower the surface area being covered is around 100sf. This size shower will take just about 1 week to install and finish. Tadelakt is a thin veneer finish. For wet-use areas we always use cement board behind our tadelakt. In addition to the thickness of the cement board, all of our layers of Tadelakt add about to ⅜”-½” thickness. (thinner than most tiles) The waterproofing measures technically happen before the actual tadelakt is applied. So, the water proofness is only effective if each step of the process has been done correctly. RUDYCO artisans prefer to do all our own prep work including installing cement board to studs and applying water-proofing membrane – in order to ensure it has been done correctly. When each step has been applied correctly and you maintain your Tadelakt surface per our instructions, Tadelakt can last the lifetime of your home.

Tadelakt requires a minimum of once a year waxing. This is easy to do as a home-owner but for a small fee we can wax your shower for you. We also recommend caulking the bottom edge of tadelakt shower walls at least once a year as well. We will supply you with all the information for cleaning and maintenance up front so you will be well informed by the time we are done with your Tadelakt project.
